McLaren is reportedly planning to discontinue the Artura hybrid supercar in 2028, six years after the model finally reached customers. The company has not confirmed the decision, but a report citing a person briefed on McLaren’s plans says the Artura will eventually leave the lineup as the automaker prepares a new hybrid coupe.

The potential change follows one of the most difficult launches in McLaren’s recent history. The Artura’s market introduction was delayed several times before production began in 2022. After deliveries started, quality problems led McLaren to temporarily stop handing cars over to customers while it worked on the issues.

Why McLaren may retire the Artura

The Artura was intended to introduce a more technology-focused direction for McLaren and bring a younger audience to the brand. Its powertrain combines a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 with an electric motor for a total of 671 horsepower.

However, the car’s early reliability problems created a difficult start. Former McLaren CEO Michael Leiters acknowledged at the end of 2022 that the car was not mature enough when it was originally meant to reach buyers. He said production had been reduced to zero cars per day while the company addressed quality concerns.

McLaren has since invested in resolving the Artura’s early problems, and the car remains part of the company’s current range. If the reported 2028 end date becomes official, though, the model would have a relatively short production life for a modern supercar.

New McLaren hybrid coupe reportedly due in 2027

McLaren is reportedly developing a new hybrid coupe under the “P34” codename. The model is expected to use an electrified twin-turbocharged V6 powertrain producing more than 800 horsepower combined, giving it a substantial output advantage over the Artura’s 671-hp system.

According to the report, the P34 could arrive in 2027, after the 720S, 750S and 765LT line ends with the 788HS. That timing would place the new coupe in McLaren’s lineup before the Artura’s reported departure, making the change look more like a product reshuffle than a direct cancellation.

McLaren’s broader product plans

The P34 is reportedly part of a wider product expansion planned under CEO Nick Collins. McLaren is said to be preparing an SUV as well as a GT-styled model described as a front-engine, sedan-like grand tourer. That car would reportedly serve as a replacement for the GTS.

McLaren has not announced the Artura’s alleged 2028 retirement, and the automaker has not confirmed the timing or specifications of the P34. For now, the Artura remains the brand’s 671-hp hybrid supercar, while its reported successor points to a more powerful and broader next phase for McLaren.
