BMW has launched an opt-in video-data program for new-generation vehicles on its Neue Klasse platform, including the 2026 iX3. Since April 2026, participating vehicles in certain markets can record short clips when their systems detect a safety-relevant driving event, giving BMW real-world data to improve driver-assistance software.
The program is intended to supplement simulations and laboratory testing with footage from actual roads. BMW says machine-learning models process the captured clips, helping engineers identify situations that are difficult to reproduce in testing. Improvements can then be delivered to compatible vehicles through over-the-air software updates, without requiring a dealer visit.
Which BMW models are included?
BMW’s regulatory material says the data program may cover the iX3, i3, 7 Series and X5 when those vehicles use the specified operating system and sensor package. The program does not automatically apply to every future BMW model sold in the European Union.
Participation is based on consent. Owners must opt in under BMW’s vehicle-data access policy rather than being enrolled by default. The automaker also says the process follows applicable data-protection requirements.
What the iX3 records
The system is designed to capture events rather than continuously record daily driving. Examples of triggers include hard braking and a near-miss during a lane change—situations that may reveal shortcomings in assisted-driving functions.
Each event can include up to 120 seconds of unedited video, combining exterior camera footage with information from the vehicle’s exterior sensors. The recording includes the moments before and after the detected incident, rather than creating a rolling archive of every trip.
Privacy protections and September 2026 changes
BMW says privacy protections apply both inside the vehicle and after footage reaches its systems. Before September 2026, faces and license plates belonging to other road users are blurred in the vehicle before the clip is transmitted. BMW then deletes vehicle identification numbers after a short period and continues the depersonalization process.
From September 2026, and where local law permits, footage may first be uploaded to BMW’s IT backend without in-vehicle blurring. BMW says it will then remove the vehicle identification number and apply additional depersonalization measures on its own systems.
Why the data matters
BMW’s approach reflects the growing importance of real-world evidence in the development and assessment of driver-assistance systems. Repeated near-miss patterns can show where software needs improvement, while over-the-air updates could allow BMW to address recurring issues more quickly.
The program also puts consent and anonymization under closer scrutiny. Owners who opt in are trading selected event footage for a potential role in improving future driver-assistance behavior, while regulators will assess whether BMW’s data-handling practices meet local privacy rules.
