BMW has revealed a long-wheelbase version of the new iX3 for China, adding 108 millimeters of wheelbase and a more upscale interior to its first Neue Klasse SUV. The 2027 BMW iX3 Long Wheelbase measures 3,005 millimeters between its axles and gains upgraded seating, additional physical controls and more comfort-focused equipment.

The stretched electric crossover follows the same formula as China’s long-wheelbase X3. While the extra length primarily benefits rear passengers, BMW has also made several cabin changes that separate this version from the international iX3.

More space and comfort inside

Rear occupants get longer and thicker seats with a more generous recline angle. The extended wheelbase creates additional rear legroom, while the completely flat floor highlights the iX3’s dedicated electric-vehicle architecture.

BMW also gives the front passenger a leg rest and quick-access seat adjustment controls. In a notable contrast with the global model, the Chinese-market iX3 uses more physical buttons. Heated rear-seat controls will also be available on the standard-wheelbase version, while the front cabin of this long-wheelbase model adds further hard keys.

Other upgrades include two-tone upholstery, expanded ambient lighting, more elaborate speaker grilles and a wireless charging pad built into the rear center armrest. Together, those changes give the stretched iX3 a more premium cabin presentation than the version sold in other markets.

Exterior changes for China

The longer rear doors make the added wheelbase visible from the outside. BMW has also replaced the global iX3’s pop-out door handles with conventional handles to meet new Chinese regulations. The same last-minute design change has been applied to the long-wheelbase i3 sedan.

The iX3’s flat floor and long body are paired with an EV-only platform, while the conventional door handles bring its exterior closer to the China-market X3.

Availability outside China

BMW’s traditional long-wheelbase models have generally been exclusive to China, but the new iX3 Long Wheelbase is expected to reach additional markets. Europe and North America are not included, however, leaving buyers in those regions without access to the more spacious cabin.

The standard-wheelbase iX3 has not yet gone on sale in the United States. BMW expects deliveries there to begin this fall. The company has not provided pricing for either iX3 version in the supplied information.

China is also receiving stretched versions of the X1/iX1 and X5. BMW plans to introduce the next-generation X5 this summer, along with the first electric iX5, continuing its strategy of offering larger, more comfort-oriented vehicles in the market.
