BMW is increasing the output of the X3 M50 xDrive to 437 horsepower for the 2027 model year while adding a new Black Package with darker exterior details and carbon-fiber interior trim. The updated performance SUV is scheduled to begin receiving the broader X3 family’s autumn 2026 changes in December 2026.

The extra muscle comes from revised engine software rather than hardware changes. BMW says the turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six now produces 45 horsepower more than the previous X3 M50 xDrive, bringing its output in line with the recently detailed M350 xDrive.

Powertrain and performance

The X3 M50 xDrive continues to use a turbocharged inline-six paired with 48-volt mild-hybrid assistance and BMW’s xDrive all-wheel-drive system. BMW has not announced a revised 0-to-60-mph time or top speed for the updated model.

BMW’s published efficiency figures use the WLTP testing cycle. The X3 M50 xDrive is rated at 8.8 liters per 100 kilometers in combined fuel consumption, with combined CO2 emissions of 199 grams per kilometer. BMW assigns the SUV a CO2 class G rating in the same material, but does not connect those figures to Euro 7 certification.

The software-led increase follows a broader BMW approach of extracting more performance from existing powertrains through calibration changes and supporting systems instead of introducing an entirely new engine block.

What the Black Package includes

The Black Package sits above the standard M Sport appearance treatment and is now available for the X3 M50 xDrive. On this model, BMW adds 22-inch Polygon-style M Black wheels, high-gloss black brake calipers and black exterior accents.

The cabin receives Alcantara trim with embossed M logos on the headrests, along with M Carbon Fibre interior trim and an M leather steering wheel with a carbon insert. The package also includes black door-sill plates, exclusive rear model lettering and a black BMW M logo on the side panel.

Across BMW’s wider M Performance range, the package can include red M Sport brakes, although the X3 M50 xDrive is specifically listed with high-gloss black brake calipers. Availability also extends across selected M Performance versions of the 2 Series Coupe, 4 Series Coupe, 4 Series Convertible, 3 Series Sedan and Touring, and 4 Series Gran Coupe depending on the market.

2027 BMW X3 M50 xDrive availability

BMW says the power increase and Black Package form part of a wider autumn 2026 update for the X3 family. The automaker plans to roll out individual changes for different X3 trims starting in December 2026, but has not yet identified which updates will apply to each version.

For buyers considering the X3 M50 xDrive, the confirmed changes bring a higher-output six-cylinder powertrain and a more distinctive appearance package without a new engine design. BMW has not provided pricing for the Black Package or detailed the specific market availability in the update.
