McLaren has confirmed plans for its first SUV, a hybrid performance model aimed at the Lamborghini Urus and Aston Martin DBX. The British supercar manufacturer expects the vehicle to reach production before the end of the decade, but it has not yet settled one of the most important engineering decisions: whether to build the SUV around carbon fiber or aluminum.

The choice is significant for a company whose road-car identity is closely tied to low weight and carbon-fiber construction. McLaren COO Michael Straughan told Top Gear that carbon fiber remains central to the brand, while acknowledging that applying the material to a vehicle of this size presents additional challenges.

Carbon fiber or aluminum?

McLaren’s preference is clear in principle, but the company is not committing to carbon fiber yet. The decision depends on whether it can make the material work effectively for a large SUV rather than a low-slung sports car.

Carbon fiber could help the new model stay closer to McLaren’s lightweight philosophy. However, scaling the company’s construction expertise to a larger, heavier vehicle will require a different approach from the one used in its existing sports cars. If McLaren cannot make carbon fiber practical for the project, aluminum is the fallback option.

That unresolved decision highlights the tension at the center of McLaren’s SUV program. The vehicle must deliver the space, size and luxury expected in this class while preserving a brand identity built around weight reduction.

McLaren SUV targets the Urus and DBX

McLaren says the SUV will compete more directly with the Lamborghini Urus and Aston Martin DBX than with the Ferrari Purosangue. That points to a more conventional performance-SUV format, rather than Ferrari’s distinct interpretation of a high-performance family vehicle.

The company’s positioning also places the McLaren in an established luxury performance segment where power, practicality and road presence matter alongside handling. Its final material choice will help determine how closely the SUV can follow McLaren’s traditional engineering priorities.

Dedicated platform and hybrid powertrain

The SUV will use a platform developed entirely by McLaren instead of borrowing an architecture from another automaker. It will also feature an in-house hybrid powertrain, although McLaren has not released output, battery, performance or efficiency figures.

Production is expected before the end of the decade. No pricing, launch date or final design details have been announced, and McLaren has not said whether the production vehicle will use carbon fiber throughout its structure or rely on aluminum.

For now, the SUV represents a major expansion of McLaren’s product strategy. The company has answered whether it will enter the segment, but the construction material, specifications and exact timing remain open questions.
